How Express Entry actually works

A plain-language overview · Reading time about 5 minutes

What is Express Entry, in one paragraph?

Express Entry is a federal system that puts eligible candidates into a single pool, scores each one with a points system, and periodically invites the highest-ranked to apply for permanent residence. It manages three programs at once, so improving your profile helps across all of them.

The pool and the invitation

Rather than first-come first-served, Express Entry works as a ranked competition. You create a profile, receive a score, and wait for rounds of invitations. Candidates above the round's cut-off are invited to apply. This is why two people who are both technically eligible can have very different odds.

What the points reward

The ranking rewards a familiar set of factors: younger age, higher education, stronger language results, and more skilled experience, with bonuses for things like a provincial nomination or certain Canadian connections. Language and education tend to be the most controllable levers.

The highest-leverage moves

If you want to raise your ranking, the reliable path is improving your language scores and making sure your education is assessed and counted. A provincial nomination can add substantial weight if you have a genuine destination in mind. Chasing small factors rarely moves the needle as much as these.

Where to start

Begin by confirming your NOC, then check your CLB and whether you need an ECA. The assessment pulls these together and shows what is holding your profile back.
