CLB Helper

Estimate your Canadian Language Benchmark (CLB) from your test scores, and see why your weakest ability usually matters most.

What is CLB?

The Canadian Language Benchmark (CLB) is a common scale from 1 to 12 that Canada uses to measure English and French ability. Language tests such as IELTS and CELPIP are converted to CLB so programs can compare everyone on one scale.

Reference estimate based on public equivalency charts. Confirm your official CLB against the Government of Canada's equivalency tables before relying on it. French tests (TEF Canada, TCF Canada) use separate official charts and are not converted here.

Why your lowest ability matters

Programs typically look at your CLB across all four abilities and judge you by the lowest one. Strong reading will not offset weak speaking, so it is usually worth focusing practice on your weakest skill.

First versus second official language

You can claim one language as your first official language and, if tested, a second. A strong first language carries the most weight, while a second can add points in some streams.

Reading the numbers

CELPIP levels line up directly with CLB. IELTS uses a conversion chart that differs by ability, which is why the same band can map to different CLB levels for listening, reading, writing, and speaking.
