Language tests and CLB
Which language test should I take, and what is CLB?
For English, take IELTS General Training, CELPIP-General, or PTE Core. For French, take TEF Canada or TCF Canada. Scores convert to a Canadian Language Benchmark (CLB) that programs use to compare applicants on one scale.
Which test to take
Choose the language you are strongest in and an approved test for it. For English that is IELTS General Training, CELPIP-General, or PTE Core; for French, TEF Canada or TCF Canada. There is no single best test, so pick the format that suits how you perform.
What CLB means
The Canadian Language Benchmark is a shared scale that lets programs compare everyone regardless of which test they took. Each test has an official conversion chart, so the same raw score can map to different CLB levels across listening, reading, writing, and speaking. Our CLB Helper gives a quick estimate.
First and second official languages
You can claim one language as your first official language and, if tested, a second. A strong first language carries the most weight, while a second can add points in some streams.
Why your weakest ability matters
Programs typically judge you by your lowest of the four abilities, so a strong reading score will not offset weak speaking. That makes targeted practice on your weakest skill one of the most efficient ways to raise your overall standing.
